Ryan Brown begins his seventh year as Director of Broadcasting and Video Services in 2015 for Wingate University. In addition, he is in his fifth year as Sports Information Assistant and eighth year as play-by-play “Voice of the Bulldogs.” Brown is a 2006 graduate of Wingate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism.
In August of 2015, Brown contracted an agreement with ESPN to become the first Division II school in the nation to stream all home events on the ESPN3 platform that reaches 99 million homes. The first ESPN3 produced stream from campus was a Wingate volleyball exhibition against the Itailian Junior National team.
As Director of Broadcasting, Brown oversees the entire Wingate Sports Network and video production department of Wingate athletics. He is responsible for Wingate’s video streaming department, which generated over $15,000 worth of revenue during the first four years. Brown is in charge of all aspects of each video and audio broadcast, including crew, graphics, and production. He creates and posts highlight videos, player spotlights, interviews, coaches’ shows, team intros and more.
The Wingate Sports Network currently streams football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, golf and swimming. Wingate University is currently the only school in the region that brings fans 12 sports over the web. Brown and the WSN have also broadcasted the NCAA football playoffs, NCAA volleyball regionals, NCAA soccer, baseball and softball, and the South Atlantic Conference tournament for basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, lacrosse and soccer.
Brown has been a part of the Sports Network for nine years, first as football sideline reporter. He then transitioned into play-by-play for soccer, volleyball, baseball, and softball. Starting in 2008, Brown took over the play-by-play for all ten sports. In addition to Wingate athletics, he has served as play-by-play for multiple NCAA and South Atlantic Conference events during his time at Wingate.
Brown has served as play-by-play broadcaster for multiple Division III national championships, as well as produced events for the USL & US Soccer National team.
As Sports Information Assistant, Brown is involved in daily duties in the department. These duties include website editing, game stories, and game day operations. He also serves as the graphic designer for Wingate publications. Brown was a student worker for Wingate Sports Information for two years.
In the summer of 2008, Brown served as Director of Media Relations and Broadcasting for the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plain League. His duties included creating game programs, website content and game stories. Brown also served as statistician and play-by-play broadcaster for all home games. He also served as media director for the Petit Cup, a season-ending league tournament.
Brown is a columnist for D2football.com and is a current member of CoSIDA. He has won multiple graphic design awards from CoSIDA for team posters and media guides covers. He was a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association “Grant Burger Media Award” for broadcasting and a recipient of the Wingate University Athletic Department Service Award.
